Back To The Cross And Himself

Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God? Joel 2:17

The prophet Joel uses these events as an illustration of God’s judgment upon Israel. A careful reading of Joel shows us that the people had slipped into a state of complacency and apathy about the things of God. Joel 2:12-15. This is also the condition of much of the Christian world today. It has slipped into a state of complacency. (Self-admiration, self esteem, self love, self importance, self satisfaction and self opinion) and apathy (impassiveness and indifference) concerning the things of The Spirit. While we know that the book of Joel was written to Israel, there is something here for believers today as well. Like Israel, we live in a land that is headed for divine judgment. We look at the church world and our nation, we wonder if there is any hope for the future.

However, the book of Joel also teaches us that there is still hope! With God, it’s never too late. Joel 2:16-32. But there are conditions that must be met…”If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”. 2 Chron 7:14. It’s time for God’s people to return to Christ and The Cross. When Pastors, Evangelists and Preachers see the complacency and apathy, they should lead the way through the preaching of The Cross to turn the people back to God. It should cause broken hearts, and intense weeping and earnest prayer.

God is calling His people, from the oldest to the youngest, to come back to Him, (Joel v.16b). He calls for those occupied by the consuming cares of life to put Him first, (Joel v.16c). He calls on the spiritual leaders of the people to come back to Him, (Joel v.17). God wants His people to seek His face once more. He wants them to get hungry for Him one more time. God is calling His people back to a place of closeness and holiness, (Joel v.16a)…It’s time to weep between the porch and the altar until the Spirit of the Lord is poured out upon us from on high. It is time for a great intercession to sweep His remnant people once again! It is time to cry aloud, and spare not……Then, and only then, will He rain down His Spirit in greater measure! Send us the Spirit of repentance & intercession to inflame and purify us once again! We need to plead for the outpouring of His favor once more. It is then that God’s people will be renewed, refreshed, and restored. He is calling His people back to The Cross and Himself.
