We Must Die To Self If God’s Will Is To Be Done.

Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Psalms 25:4.

In recent times I have been desirous to know God’s way. I ask The Lord that I be taught his path and led into His Truth in greater measure. We cannot discern this way unless God show it to us and neither can we learn His Path unless He teaches us. In the book of Exodus Moses longed very intensely to know God’s ways. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. Ex 33:13. It is quite possible for believers to know something about God’s acts (e.g. Salvation and miracles c.f. Psalms103:7) yet really never have a current and personal relationship with Him or truly know His ways. But as God’s children our fervent prayer must be to know His ways and ultimately to know God Himself… That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Phil 3:10.

There are those who think that because God gave them a free will, they can choose their own way and do what they want to do. God has indeed given each of us a free moral will. Yet He desires that we choose His will and ways. In the book of proverbs we are told to “trust in The Lord with all our hearts and not to lean on our own ways or understanding…Proverbs 3:5-6. Are we relying on self or depending on God to direct our steps? There’s nothing greater than being led by God (The Holy Spirit). God’s ways are truth and they are right. They are much higher than our ways. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. Isaiah 55:8. Our thoughts and our ways are not God’s thoughts and ways. Our carnal ways have the seed of death, but God’s Way is truth and it is right… Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein. Hosea 14:9.

God’s way is different from the way of the world. God’s Way is the way of The Cross (the way of self-denial). The way of The Cross is the way of life. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23. We must not only believe the message of The Cross, but we must daily make the definitive choice to deny ourselves and place our trust and confidence in Him or follow our own pernicious ways. The choice we make will either lead us closer to God or closer to the world…My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 10:27. Our own will must, of necessity, be denied. We must die to self if God’s will is to be done. There is no middle ground! Every step that we take in following Jesus and every step in the way of Christ and The Cross, is a step in denying ( and saying “no” to) self and our own pernicious will and way…
