“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” I John 5:14 NKJV
The NLT puts it this way: “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him”
And the GNT renders it this way: “We have courage in God’s presence, because we are sure that he hears us if we ask him for anything that is according to his will”
The truth is that the modern church prays too much! To be specific, Nigerian church people pray too much. Prayer camps and mountains litter our expressways. If you travel from Ibadan to Lagos you will notice that Nigeria might just be the prayer headquarters of the world. If there is an award for praying I believe the Nigerian church will win the award. Prayer”warriors” war all over town and prayer camps.
But they pray amiss. Why? Because they are not praying on God’s terms. Poverty and financial deprivation occasioned by heartless and demonic political governnance at all levels of leadership in Nigeria is the reason for this unwarranted and unbiblical praying. They do their own thing and mistake it for praying. What’s God’s terms? His WILL. What is His will? His word! The Bible! Most church people who are “dying” even while “praying” because they are chronically ignorant of biblical truths.
What christians hear in church today is mere humanism or if you like, anthropocentrism. They hear a gospel that is gospelless and practice a Christless Christianity. They have been made to become objects of their personal worship instead of God. Christ and His perfect substitutionary sacrifice on the cross is not the theme of teachings. The glory of God is not the end of their teachings.
This is why most of the prayers christians do today is basically prayers for food, shelter, clothing, power, position, promotion, and reputation. They focus on killing witches and imaginary enemies of progress, and they call it prayers. Effective prayers, the type God will hear, must be God-centered. We must realize that God doesn’t answer our prayers. He answers only His WILL.
Therefore, pastors who are saddled with the responsibility of facilitating the spiritual edification of believers need to teach people WHO GOD IS and what He WANTS FROM THEM. Then prayers can begin to make sense! We cannot be “ranting” prayers at a God we know nothing about. We cannot harangue God into submitting to our unending carnal desires. God is NOT a genie that runs errands for greed-ridden church folks, neither is He a vending machine that grants our greed laden requests. We must learn to pray in the way God has prescribed!
